sesame turkey skewers with coriander & lime chips and asian slaw.

made with delicious british turkey and fresh red tractor assured ingredients, this recipe is inspired by my favourite asian flavours of sesame seeds, soy sauce, sesame oil and coriander. i really think turkey and coriander are such a perfect match whilst the sesame and soy complement the asian vegetables in the slaw.

it takes around 45 minutes to make and with would serve as a meal for two or as a light bite for four - i actually took the remaining sesame turkey into work the next day for lunch with the slaw and some salad.

shopping list
for the skewers
♥ 500g british turkey
♥ three tbsp sesame seeds
♥ two tbsp soy sauce
♥ two tsbp runny honey
♥ one tbsp sesame oil
♥ four wooden skewers

for the chips
♥ 500g potatoes*
♥ tsbp dried coriander leaves
♥ the juice of one lime
♥ a dash of olive oil

for the slaw
♥ 100g carrots, grated*
♥ one pak choi, finely sliced*
♥ 100g red cabbage, grated*
♥ three spring onions, finely sliced*
♥ a handful of coriander, chopped*
♥ 75g sour cream*
♥ a little salt and black pepper

*all red tractor assured ingredients, which means they can be traced back to a british farm :)

preheat the oven to 180 degrees ready for your homemade chips later on.
next, cut the turkey steaks into bite size chunks and drizzle with the soy sauce, sesame oil and runny honey.

place in the fridge or set aside in a cool place whilst you prepare the coriander and lime chips.
you make these by simply chopping up the potatoes in half and then into slices. scatter them on a baking tray, then pour over a little olive oil followed by the juice of the lime and sprinkles of coriander. dried coriander is essential as fresh would burn and taste bitter. a tip for getting extra juice out of the lime is to heat in the microwave for a quick 15 seconds.

lastly, place the chips in the oven for 40 minutes. have a little check on them now and again, shuffling the tray and turning half way.

next is the third part of the dish... the asian inspired coleslaw. you grate the carrots and red cabbage, then roughly slice up the spring onion and pak choi discarding the dark green leaves. i used two carrots which roughly came to 100g. but i guess you could use more or less or what you like best. spring onion was a must for me!

stir in the sour cream, coriander leaves and twist in a little salt and pepper. serve with a little more of the coriander. well why not? set aside to bring together at the end.

you then arrange the turkey pieces on the skewers and place on a baking tray with tin foil.

grill the skewers on a medium heat for 10-15 minutes, turning every few minutes. careful of your fingers - those skewers get hot! some sesame seeds may sadly burn a little as they cook so quickly, these luckily can be brushed off but if you're worried about them burning then lower the grill shelf or cover with tin foil until the last few minutes.

by now hopefully everything should be ready around the same time - but don't worry if not. you can always keep the chips warm but turn the oven off or vice versa with the turkey. bring together and there you have it!

there are so many ways you can incorporate turkey as a alternative to chicken - can you believe it's often healthier too? think turkey lasagne, turkey burritos, casserole, dim sum, burgers, quiche, pies, jambalaya or just a classic well seasoned joint with lots of veg... it's not all turkey curry after christmas dinner you know! :)

what's your favourite turkey recipe? do you check for british sourced and red tractor assured ingredients whilst you shop?

  1. The skewers look really good - I'm now feeling really hungry, although it's far too early for dinner. Do you think they would work with whole turkey breast instead of diced and skewered turkey? I'd love to try them, but I'm pretty sure that if I make skewers my ever hungry partner will claim I don't feed him enough :P

    1. Hehe! Glad you like the recipe :) I think it would work if you covered the turkey breasts in a parcel of tin foil and then cooked them in the oven for around 20 minutes so they kept the moisture in? I've done that kind of thing with chicken before. Let me know how it turns out xx
