fahrenheit bar & grill, derby.

A sleek and contemporary restaurant with a modern menu to suit all tastes and appetites. The Fahrenheit Bar & Grill can be found within the Genting Club Riverlights casino in Derby city. Not having previously dined in a casino, I was intrigued as to what the eat, drink and play experience would offer.

Met with high windows, a gleaming bar and large, winding stairs, the restaurant and casino can be found on the first floor. I was really taken by the decor; with cosy booths, exposed brickwork and large ceiling lights. Not what you'd expect of a casino, right? Through the subtle glass divide, you could still see the gaming goings on, with everything from vibrant slot machines to croupiers dealing out cards.

With a casino not the first on everyone's list for a weekend meal out (mine included), I couldn't wait to see how the food fared. The promising menu featured inviting grill offerings, vegetarian dishes, varied starters and an array of sides, sauces and toppings. I went for a classic Pinot G whilst I browsed the menu - I won't lie I was deliberately going to pick something that would be tricky to make quickly and well. I went for the Crispy Calamari starter (£5.45) and Seared Seabass with Mediterranean Risotto for main (£15.95). My dining partner went for the Fahrenheit BBQ Hot Chicken Wings (£5.25) and for main the 10z Rib Eye Steak (£17.95). The wine arrived very swiftly and was ice cold - a good start.

As you can see, presentation was on point. With some of my favourite flavour combinations of chilli, lime, lemon and garlic alongside the calamari, I was in my element. These were probably some of the largest calamari rings I'd ever had and certainly lived up to their crispy title. Personally I really, really liked them, but I know some may have preferred smaller rings or a less crunchy texture. My boyfriend delved into his incredibly generous portion of chicken wings with a smile on his face - I'm told they were sticky, smoky, spicy and sweet. Sounds about right then!

Time for mains. Apart from wanting to steal that beautiful plate, I was yet again pretty happy with the presentation. I chose this dish as risotto is traditionally pretty tricky to get right and especially when needed to be warmed up in a restaurant. Actually, I was seriously impressed; a rich and tomatoey risotto which verged on paella, with crunchy asparagus and lightly seasoned seabass. Honestly a very skilled and tasty dish which deserved its £15.95 price tag.

My boyfriend enjoyed his rib eye, which he had with classic chips and the Fahrenheit signature chilli and Bourbon sauce. It was a nice 10z cut of meat and had been seasoned well too. The only complaint was that it was a little overdone for medium rare, which we suspect might've be due to the high heat of the chargrill. The sauce was moreish and the chips were delicious, fluffy and crunchy.

Oh yes, the sides. Could these be the largest onion rings in the world? Our eyes and stomachs had definitely got the better of us with these choices. Really generous after such good size starter and main portions. Pretty standard and no complaints or lifechanging moments here. I would only recommend sides if you're with a large group or thinking of having them as snacks with a drink. Plus I'd spied a Baileys Creme Brûlée on the menu, and it was going to be mine.

I'm sad to say this was a bit of a disappointment. The topping was just really burnt, without the layer of hardened sugar and famous creme brûlée crack you'd expect. Although the flavour beneath was creamy and sweet, I couldn't taste the booziness of the Baileys either. With a few tweaks, I think the Baileys and raspberry combination could have worked really well.

Not one to end on a bad note, the overall dining experience was really good. With friendly and timely service, brilliant choices and a great atmosphere, the Fahrenheit Bar & Grill exceeded my expectations. It was nice to see things weren't just thrown together quickly so diners sent back to put money on the slots. Instead, the dishes were well thought out and worthy of a restaurant in their own right.

Oh and just so you know, you don't have to be a member to go, but you must be over 18. (I got asked how old I was *giggles*)

Lots of dressed up groups and couples gradually filled up the restaurant whilst we were there, enjoying their meals and then going off for a cheeky bet on roulette. I think it'd make a great night out with family and friends!

Would you ever try out a casino for an alternative meal and night out?

  1. This looks like a lovely meal! I often find creme brulee to be a bit hit and miss, the best I've had so far was at Hawksmoor (passionfruit!) I must really stop reading food blogs when I'm hungry.... I'm starving now! Off to make dinner....

  2. I think the starters look the most exciting here, I love the look of those giant calamari rings! Great review, I like how you have the knowledge to explain what mistakes they've made.
