Thornton Hall Spa Hotel Review

Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa is a luxury hotel retreat found in The Wirral. Despite the impressive 62 bedrooms, a grand entrance hall, restaurant and bar, plus two spas, the hotel itself maintains an intimate, boutique feel. I travelled North West for a weekend away, where I enjoyed their A Little Luxury stay and spa package and dined in The Lawns restaurant.

Thornton Hall
Thornton Hall The Wirral Review

Boasting character and charm, Thornton Hall is a well dressed establishment with quirky armchairs, soft furnishings and fittings throughout. The staff were polished but friendly, and were more than happy to help whilst they told us the story of the antique policeman's armchairs in the reception. As we were a little early for the 2pm check in, we made our way into the well stocked bar and enjoyed a couple of relaxed drinks. As soon as our room was ready, two staff members promptly took our bags to the room and gave us a mini tour of our surroundings.

Our Club Bedroom was decorated in a mix of deep orange and light cappuccino tones with pops of orange accessories. I fell in love with the Orla Kiely-esque feature wall, as well as the rustic furniture with intricate, brushed metal handles. Although there was a lot of colour and accessories going on in the room, it married really well and looked characterful rather than cluttered. On the wall was an old map of Liverpool and Merseyside, which I thought was a nice touch and nod to the local area.

In a clean palette of whites and neutrals with large tiles, the bathroom was just the right size for a couple. We were presented with thick white robes and lots of lovely bath products to get ready for the evening ahead. Most importantly, there were lots of bright mirrors and easy access plus sockets.

Before our meal that evening, we indulged in some afternoon treatments and access to the Thornton Hall spa. Within minutes, our neck, back and shoulder massages whisked us away to tranquility, seamlessly forgetting how horrendous the M6 Northbound had been. As we were at The Lodge on the other side of the grounds, the cheery staff at the spa were happy to come over in a golf buggy and save us from the rain. The buggy even had cushions and blankets - such a nice touch that was rather amusing too.

Next we went to explore the spa itself, changing into our robes and swimwear ready to enjoy their hot tub! Featuring the usual sauna and steam room, we were especially intrigued by the snow cave and rainforest shower. This was certainly an experience - taking your body temperature from the heat of the sauna right down to ice cold in seconds. At least I can say I've seen snow already this season. We also enjoyed the fragrant monsoon shower before having a leisurely swim in the pool. The spa wasn't too busy for a Saturday at all, although we didn't get to try out the outdoor hot tubs since a couple of hen weekends beat us to it! Instead I sipped on a G&T in the spa's brasserie and bar area, before we suddenly realised it was time to start getting ready for the evening. As I mentioned, we dined in The Lawns restaurant, which I featured on the blog last week.

After a super cosy slumber in their comfy beds, it was time to breakfast. This came in the form of a buffet with a great offering for all tastes. This was served in the same great hall with table service for drinks.

On the other hand, we did feel like they were missing out on special items to order. I really like a breakfast mix, where the usual juices, fruit and cereals are there to help yourself, but at the same time you can order fresh eggs, hot smoked kippers, cooked breakfasts and so on. In my opinion, I feel like it means less food waste and gives a more personal touch. After such an impressive dining service the night before, this would have been the icing on the cake for me!

In all the whole weekend was a delightful experience and I would definitely recommend to others! We felt like we were in a little space of tranquility for the weekend, surrounded by a relaxing atmosphere, great food and staff who couldn't do enough for us.

  3. Snow cave?! What on earth is a snow cave?! I do love a good spa. Thornton Hall sounds wonderful. Sounds like you did the right think booking a massage. Very jealous.
