the old thatched inn, adstock, buckinghamshire.

The Old Thatched Inn is a cosy, traditional pub found in Adstock near Buckingham. On our way back from a weekend away in The Cotswolds, we were invited along to try their famous Sunday lunch. Nestled in a peaceful village setting, The Old Thatched Inn is a postcard perfect thatched pub with crackling fire and exposed brickwork. The tables and chairs are charmingly mismatched, with a few tables made from large pieces of reclaimed wood with a natural grain. It was just the place you wanted to be on a cold but sunny Sunday.

We'd booked for 12pm, and as we were driving there I started to worry that this was a little early, since the place opens at 12. Actually we were met with an already buzzing restaurant which was around a third full by 12.15. Definitely a popular place for pub grub! We were seated on sofas whilst we looked through the menu, as other groups were shown to their seats as and when.

After a large breakfast, we skipped the starters in favour of their Sunday dinner. My partner went for the classic pork roast whilst I opted for Slow Cooked Aylesbury Duck Leg (£13.95) served with a bubble and squeak cake, seasonal vegetables and red wine gravy. At first I fancied the lamb dish, although it was more of a stew and a Sunday lunch style dish is what I was craving. Well presented and with welcoming service, it wasn't long before we were tucking into our meals.

Mine was a more minimal dinner, with lots of indulgent elements to tuck into. The duck fell off the bone and the bubble cake was a tasty addition. It left me feeling satisfied, but not too full and sleepy. Sam on the other hand had opted for the ultimate Roast Pork Loin (£13.95) with all the classic accompaniments he gobbled it up and probably would have gone for a nap by the fire, if he could.

My delicious main left just a tiny dessert shaped hole in my stomach that meant I got to try one of their puds. At around £6 I plucked for their Banana Bread with honeycomb ice cream. Beautifully presented and the cute little slice was the ideal portion for rounding off my meal. Sam had a leisurely freshly brewed coffee before we made our way back to the Midlands.

If you live nearby or are perhaps planning on passing the M1 or M40 of a weekend, I definitely recommend booking in. A lovely, popular place with great traditional British food and welcoming atmosphere.

We stayed at The White Horse Inn that weekend too, with a review of The Fox and Goat coming your way very soon too.
