st. petroc's bistro, padstow, cornwall.

if you follow me on twitter or instagram, you'll have seen the holiday snaps (perhaps a few too many) from my recent staycation in newquay. now i think it would be a foodie faux pas to spend a long weekend in north cornwall and not make your way to the seafood restaurants in the quaint fishing town of padstow.

with a table at st. petroc's bisto waiting for us at at half six, we made our way down to padstow that afternoon to enjoy a few drinks overlooking the harbour in in the sun.

in case you didn't know, st. petroc's is owned by rick stein along with a seafood restaurant, fish and chip shop, cafe, deli and pub restaurant. i was worried i was going to be disappointed as many people say it isn't as good now he has so many businesses in the area. other recommendations included the basement, paul ainsworth's number 6 and pescadou. so what did i make of it? since i saved these pictures from social media just for this post - i just couldn't wait to write this post and share them with you!

we begun with a generous bowl of kalamata olives at £2.50. a good bowl of olives is something i miss from my days of working in a leicester deli shop.

i enjoyed a glass of rick stein’s spanish white, which in his own words was described as: "after a number of seafood delights while filming in galicia and drinking cold rueda from white china cups, i had to find a really well made one for us. it's charmingly fresh and fragrant. made with verdejo grapes, it's a wine to celebrate the spanish book and tv series." i chose it to go with the seafood fest which was about to ensue - so trieeed to save some for that!

hellooooo scallops! a combination of pumpkin seeds, serrano chilli and coriander made a tasty and textured sauce which went perfectly with these meaty scallops. they were tricky to eat and in retrospect it took me until the third scallop to realise i should cut it off the shell rather than try and eat it whilst still attached. duh. i enjoyed the meat as well as the roe and as always with scallops i could have eaten 50 more. these were £8.95.

my boyfriend had the lightly curried crab mayonnaise with rocket at £8.95. this was, like many of stein's dishes i've seen him make in programmes, a very simply way to show fresh seafood at it's best. i do think this was slightly overpriced for what is was, as there other starters and appetisers that seemed more technical than this to make, yet were cheaper. such as salt cod fritters at £3.50 and coarse pork and herb terrine with beetroot chutney at £7.95.

for main, he had a 10 oz 28 day dry aged scottish highland beef rib eye steak with bĂ©arnaise sauce and watercress for £25.50. polar opposite from the starter, we couldn't believe the size of this thing. it was rather thin so would have been tricky to get it rare. but i guess you are suppose to have rib eye medium anyway, which is how he had it :)

for sides, we also enjoyed baby gem salad with shallots, cream and cabernet sauvignon vinegar and thin cut chips with aioli (garlic mayonnaise). they were a reasonable £2.90 each. i liked that the chips were just no-fuss classic chips. crispy and moreish.

my favourite part... my main! this must be a new one as they haven't yet updated their online menu but i remember this salmon dish being around £16-17. it was beautifully seasoned with a buttery garlic sauce which wasn't at all greasy - great for dipping my chips in. the salmon literally just fell apart and the skin was cooked just right too. mmm!

all in all i was really pleased with my experience at st. petroc's and would definitely return. i admit i had gone in with my doubts and not got my hopes too high. best way really isn't it? i sadly didn't mean mr stein himself but the staff were extremely warm and friendly upon arrival - including little touches like asking if we'd like to sit in the lounge before dining, being patient and helpful with the menu and folding up my napkin when i went to the loo. it sounds silly but these are the little things that make us smile aren't they!

note: we paid for the bill ourselves and all honest opinions are my own.
