the bluebell inn, rothley, leicestershire.

last week i headed off to the picturesque leicestershire village of rothley to meet up with two lovely foodies and bloggers alex and charlotte. it was a sunny evening so we sat outside and slurped on orange and lemonade whilst taking in the pretty exterior of the pub and browsing the menu.

when i say browsing, two dishes had actually already jumped out at me whilst checking the bluebell inn menu out online; asparagus, spinach and fried duck egg on sour dough, with pan fried devilled scallops for main. i stuck to my guns and wasn't disappointed.

inside there is a welcoming local pub atmosphere with eccentric painted furniture, mismatched lampshades and homely decor. this is channeled in a clean and contemporary way, which still makes the bluebell feel like a restaurant that you would enjoy an inviting and beautifully presented meal. we couldn't believe the amount of tables filling up for a thursday night either.

firstly, how gorgeous is that plate? a striking start to a mouth-watering meal, this slightly crispy gooey fried egg was met with charred asparagus, wilted spinach and the tang of the white wine vinegar from the béarnaise sauce. a sprinkle of watercress and crunchy sour dough base made for the perfect accompaniments.

charlotte went for the pulled pork with sesame toast, whilst alex opted for the sea salt and pepper squid with chilli salsa. we were all in agreement that the pulled pork was divine, yet such a shame that there never seems to be enough bread with those kind of pâté or terrine dishes. the calamari was again really well presented, and although i didn't try any i'm told the chilli salsa was yummy but not actually that spicy.

for main i had pan fried devilled scallops, cucumber & mooli salad with lime yoghurt. this came with skinny fries for the full size option, although can be a starter too.

this was the sort of thing that, if i was on saturday kitchen, would be my food heaven. firstly, i find it almost impossible to avoid scallop dishes on any menu. secondly, the japanese inspired mooli salad was right up my street. the scallops had a smokey and garlicky pan fried top, which tasted like they had pan fried in paprika and lashings of good quality butter. i just wish there had been more of that sauce.

obligatory foodie taking picture of a foodie taking a picture of food...

i feel like my quick snap doesn't do this fantastic hereford beef rib justice so be sure to head over to alex's blog and read her review. what i can vouch for though, is this meat absolutely fell off the bone. i can't wait to go back and try this for myself.

charlotte enjoyed the beer battered (and sustainable) fish and chips on another pretty plate. complete with a cute little kilner jar of tartare sauce and garden pea purée, choosing the traditional chunky chips over skinny was the way to go.

a countryside restaurant bursting with character, friendly faces, locally sourced leicestershire food and a delectable seasonal menu. and of course, great company. what more could you ask for?
