number thirty eight, clifton, bristol.

Found in the quirky suburb of Clifton in Bristol, Number Thirty Eight is an independently run, luxury townhouse. With just ten bedrooms, the boutique hotel has been refurbished from an old Georgian merchant's house. Priding themselves on a "home away from home" atmosphere, the beautiful townhouse is in keeping with original features, whilst boasting a clean and contemporary finish.

I went along for a short Bristol city break, booking it for it's boutique charm as well as good access to Clifton and the city centre. Nestled just off Whiteladies Road, on Upper Belgrave Road, there are frequent buses from the Black Boy Hill stop. After parking up outside, which is free on Saturday evenings and Sundays, we hopped on the next bus and bought a day ticket without any fuss.

We were a little early for check in, which is at 2pm, and so were given our key whilst we explored the city. The weekend happened to be terribly rainy and windy, with the host offering us a coffee or cuppa should we need to warm up. The communal areas were certainly welcoming and homely, with interesting books and art lining the walls. I loved the heritage inspired upholstery, met with vibrant modern art and old black and white photographs.

I'd booked a House Room, which starts at £125 a night including breakfast. With a king size bed and freestanding bath, this room featured a luxury mini bar, waffle dressing gowns, Ren bath products and free WiFi. It also included a hairdryer, Freeview TV as well as fresh milk in the fridge for teas and coffees. The decor continued the old versus new theme, with character furniture, clean white walls and an up-to-date bathroom. As we walked into the room, the green Roberts radio had be set to Classic FM, putting us at ease as we settled into the comfy surroundings.

Having paid the extra for a room with a roll top bath (shower only rooms start at £115) I fulled indulged with the quality Ren products. There was a large shower too, as well as a heated towel rail and plenty of mirrors and shelf space. The perfect place to recharge before heading out for dinner. Although I won't be blogging about it, I highly recommend Steak of the Art, by the way.

After a peaceful and comfortable night's sleep, it was time for breakfast. I wasn't surprised to see a quaint spread of buttery pastries, granola in Kilner jars and fresh fruit and juice. With BBC Radio 6 Music as our backdrop, we were invited to choose freshly cooked breakfast options from the menu.

Of course I went for the avocado option, coming on sourdough bread with crispy bacon, chilli flakes and tomatoes. The waitress had warned me it would be spicy, but it wasn't too bad at all. I also indulged in a strong latte and orange juice to set me up for the long drive home.

I would highly recommend Number Thirty Eight. It's the perfect haven for exploring the city and Clifton area, especially if you love independent hotels bursting with character, touches of luxury and home comforts.

Have you stayed at a hotel in Bristol? Or perhaps at Number 38? I'd love to hear your experiences...
