Found along the Melton Road in Nottingham's sought-after West Bridgford area, Chao Chao boasts an array of Southeast Asian dishes, now available to enjoy in their new restaurant. Previously a popular Oriental inspired takeaway. their self-proclaimed urban kitchen brings to life flavours from Thailand, Japan, Korea and Malaysia with the freshest possible ingredients.
Back when we could, I was invited along to experience the new dine in menu - and with their Instagram feed packed with scroll after scroll of tempting treats, we couldn't resist. From Chilli Beef Meatball Ramen to Katsu Arancini, the menu is as modern as the setting, with plenty to choose from whatever your tastes or dietary requirements. Vegan options included the likes of Bang Bang Cauliflower Tempura, whilst twists on classic dishes came in the form of Asian Street Fries. And although you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, or a restaurant by its pretty menu and fonts, the menu did really display the items in a fun, accessible and enticing way. Luckily, this is exactly how the dishes were.
Although they had lots of mouthwatering mains, we were drawn to the tapas style menu, called Tapasu. Of course - a great way to sample a lot of dishes and avoid palette fatigue - as well as a more sociable style of eating. We went for around eight dishes to share, including BBQ Pork Belly Bao buns. Jakarta Chicken Satay and Rock Shrimp Tempura.
Overall, we were quite frankly, overly impressed by the standard of food and service. Don't be put off by thinking this is a takeaway with a few cheap tables crammed in. The was a proper table service, with lovely tableware and interesting crockery, giving a true restaurant experience. We've already said we'll definitely be back!
