okay so i only went to whitby for the day, but what's a blog title without alliteration right? off we went on saturday morning for a northern road trip to whitby, a stay in scarborough and a sunday spent pottering about in york. the weather was kind and it was a lovely bank holiday weekend with lots of fun (and food!) to be had.
handy for me, the friendly people at ritz had sent me a cute red bag packed with their latest ritz breaks and a few treats for out and about in the summer. the bag also had a rain mac but was hoping i wouldn't need it. with the weather being so temperamental i didn't think i'd get a chance to try these out - but luckily the sun came out and i munched on the rosemary and olive oil crackers to my heart's content on the drive up. you simply must try them.
as to be expected on a bank holiday weekend, the tiny little seaside town was brimming with visitors hungry for fish and chips, ice cream, fudge and rock. we headed straight for the magpie cafe, on my dad's recommendation, to sample their traditional fish and chips. we queued up just minutes before the clock struck 12pm, with a gigantic queue forming minutes after.
believe it or not, this was just a regular portion of haddock and chips. we also had accompaniments of mushy peas, pickled onions and bread and butter to make classic chip butties. of course the coca cola in a glass was essential. sadly, fish and chips this good and in such a popular seaside town don't come cheap. with the mains coming in at £9.99, the total bill came to just under £35. i gotta say though, it was worth it.
of course an hour or so later this was followed by something sweet; yorvale dairy ice cream with english butter toffee pieces. sometimes i don't know how i can still fit in dessert. but i certainly give it a go.
we soon walked off the food with a game of crazy golf (i won) and explore around the cobbled streets.
a brilliant weekend and i can't wait to share with you the meal we had that evening and my first trip to betty's in york. over and out.
note: i was sent the new ritz breaks and for consideration and the apple products in the photograph were purchased by me. all opinions are honest and my own.
Those fish and chips looks magnificent! Glad the weather was kind and you had a nice break
