What struck me about Box'd Fresh is that a lot of the recipes are pretty healthy, with each recipe featuring at least one of your five a day and wholesome carb choices such as quinoa, sweet potato and lentils. There are also lots of vegan options, with enough choice that you could easily make up a dairy free box. A few months back the lovely lot at Box'd Fresh sent me a box to review, as well as the chance for my readers to win one too. Scroll on to found out how...
The box itself was as I'd hoped; lots of portioned out ingredients and vibrant vegetables. That week I'd opted for their Pink Peppercorn Steak with Sweet Potato Wedges, Monkfish Kebabs with Middle Eastern Quinoa and the Mexican Sweet Potato Salad. It would have cost £42, at a price of £7 per serving and free delivery.
The first to try was the steak, which straight away seemed like fantastic quality. It was a simple dish of fillet steak with wedges, which could be cooked whilst you pan fried the meat to your liking. With fillet steak starting at around £6 for 180g, the ingredients for this would have cost at least £15, not including hunting down pink peppercorns and having to buy a whole pack. Their meat is sourced from renowned British butcher Suffolk Meat Traders, which have glowing reviews.
The dish was finished with lemon too, which we thought was unusual but actually brought out the meat really well. Definitely something to try again.
Next up was the monkfish dish, which we enjoyed for lunch. The fish is sourced from Wing Of St. Mawes, a family fishmonger with over 25 years experience. I was seriously impressed by the generous amount of monkfish here. I've since recreated a similar monkfish kebab dish and paid £6 on the fish counter for a much smaller monkfish tail, that actually ended up having a huge bone in.
It was definitely our favourite of the three dishes, and like I said inspired us to make the same again with cous cous and tomatoes. It certainly converted my boyfriend into eating more seafood and was a lovely light weekend lunch with lots of fresh flavours.
Lastly, I enjoyed the Mexican salad. Although it was a weekday evening without any light for a photograph. I can honestly say the final result looked a lot like the below. (They even almost use the same backgrounds as me...) It was a great vegan choice for #meatfreemonday featuring quality avocado, sweet potato, organic black beans, fresh herbs and lime. I think I got about seven of my five a day that Monday...
In all, I found it to be an easy-to-follow system with some great recipe choice on offer. Whether you're a couple or family, pescatarian or vegan, you can pick and choose to tailor your box to you. You can easily choose a one off box and they often have some great discount codes now and again too.
