slow cooked beef with gnocchi.

A wholesome, comforting beef recipe which is super simple to make and won't break the bank either. This season, Red Tractor and Simply Beef & Lamb are leading the #LivePeasant campaign to encourage every day home cooks to embrace a more simple, rustic approach to cooking. Stew and casserole recipes are at the heart of the campaign, making affordable cuts of beef and lamb tender and tasty using traditional one-pot methods.

This slow cooked beef recipe is teamed with warming cinnamon, spicy cayenne pepper and smoky paprika before being stirred through with gnocchi and topped with fresh parsley. Just perfect!

Shopping list.
(Serves two)
♥ 250-300g lean braising steak cut into cubes
♥ Salt and black pepper
♥ 2 tsp cayenne pepper
♥ 1tsp paprika
♥ 30ml rapeseed oil
♥ One large onion
♥ Two cloves of smoked garlic, peeled and finely chopped or crushed
♥ One 400g can of chopped tomatoes
♥ 200ml beef stock
♥ 2 tsp ground cinnamon
♥ 2 tsp caster sugar
♥ 1tbsp tomato purée
♥ 200g pack fresh gnocchi
♥ A handful of freshly chopped flat-leaf parsley, to garnish

Based on the original recipe from Simple Beef & Lamb here. It said it would take 20 minutes prep and 2 hours 30 cooking. It actually took more like 10 minutes to prepare which was great. I used my slow cooker for 5-6 hours instead of having it on the hob - the beef was tender and delicious!

Step one. Use a plastic bag to season the beef with the salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper and paprika.

Step two. Heat the oil in a pan and fry off the beef. Cook together with the onion and garlic.

Step three. Add the beef, onions, garlic and other ingredients to your slow cooker and set to high. Cook for 5-6 hours. The sauce will thicken up but if you think it's going to dry out, add a tiny bit of boiling water.

Step four. In the last 10 minutes, add in the gnocchi and allow to cook in the sauce.

Sprinkle with fresh parsley and serve straight away!
