baglioni hotel regina, rome, italy.

Baglioni Hotel Regina is a 5 star hotel in Rome, nearby the Spanish Stairs and the Trevi Fountain. It's located in a rather swish area of the Italian city, Via Veneto, known for boutique shopping and luxury brands. A short walk away from the Spagna Metro station, you'll find the beautiful stone building with a grand entrance, black wrought iron iron detailing and well kept flower boxes. The perfect mix of grandeur, luxury and a touch of Italy.

You may remember a food blog competition I entered earlier this year with Destinology, to win a luxury holiday to Europe. I was lucky enough to win said competition with a Spanish take on Moules Mariniere; and I went on to pick Rome. It's somewhere I wanted to add to my forever growing travel list, and it seemed like the perfect mix of city break with that extra sun. Little did I realise it was going to be 37 degrees in the burning sun, but I should have known better than to pick August for our trip.

Upon arriving at the Baglioni Hotel Regina, you're met with a charming but courteous member of staff, ready to help you with your bags and show you to your room. Having travelled from the airport in the midday sun, the ice cold air con sweeping around me was enough to put a smile on my face.

The theme of grandeur continued through to the reception, bar and restaurant, with hints of Art Deco opulence dotted throughout. Mirrored surfaces, rich purples, monochrome and gold made up the decor, feeling like a page out of the Great Gatsby. On one of the days, they were actually filming an Italian film in the lobby, although sad to say I didn't make the cameo - even though I was sporting a floppy hat and everything.

We stayed in a Superior Room (from 260 Euros a night), which promised classic Italian style with luxury cotton bed linen and a spacious marbled bathroom. I especially loved the dark furniture and drawers, something I wouldn't naturally pick for myself but gave the bedroom real character. The finishing touches were nice too; complimentary robes, a bottle of Italian red and chocolate truffles. I was worried the thick bedding would be too much for such a hot few days in August, but the no-fuss AC proved to be our best friend for the trip.

The room was a great size with two parts to the bathroom; separate rooms for the bath, loo and then for a rainforest shower and his and her sinks. In addition, our room was made up twice a day, meaning when we got in from a day of activities everything was replenished, and then again when we came home from evening meals.

As we were on our feet all day, we also made use of the complimentary spa. Although rather small, we found that around 4pm it was always empty for us to enjoy the sauna and jacuzzi on our own. With a peppermint tea on hand of course. You can also book a treatment in for your stay, with 10% guest discount. However we didn't find the time and with quite a high starting price (from 110 Euros), we spent all our money on pasta and pizza instead.

The daily breakfasts offerings were fantastic. Like most hotels, there were the usual hot choices as well as continental cheese, meat and bread. Plus - ever Prosecco if you fancied a breakfast with bubbles! Even better, those with dietary requirements would be pleased to know that they also did gluten free cereal, soya milk and lactose free yogurts. It was a pleasure to come down to breakfast every morning and enjoy a soy cappuccino with top notch Italian coffee.

Although my experience was a prize, I would recommend Baglioni Hotel Regina looking for a little luxury in the beautiful Italian capital. I was warned that 4 and 5 star hotels in Rome can be a lower standard than other cities as they have a much more traditional style. However this had a real mix of the traditional and modern, making it a very special break.

More on Rome soon - where I'll be rounding up my favourite bits. Next city booked for a break - Berlin!

Have you ever been to Rome? Where did you stay?

Note: Although I won a stay at the Hotel Regina, the staff did not know I was a blogger or writing about the experience.

  2. Congratulations! What a fab prize. I've only spent one day in Rome as a post of call on a Cruise. I did throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain so hopefully I will return one day.
